The feet of Nelson Mandela play an important role in his iconography. On Robben Island, as the song tells us, his shoes were too small to fit his feet, and that in itself became a symbol of the callous inhumanity of the system. Then he walked, and walked, and walked, a long road to find his freedom. That stride, now immortalised in bronze at the foot of the colossus at the Union Buildings.
