The bronze of the Voortrekker mother with her children, at the entrance to the Voortrekker Monument, is very similar in style to the epic political artworks of the Soviet era. It also reminds me of that famous photograph of the mother and her children in Depression-era America, by Dorothea Lange. This statue is by Anton von Wouw, although when you get close up to it, and you see the stained and pitted faces, you realise that time and weather are the ultimate sculptors.
