And finally: Ma Brrr. Brenda Fassie, cast in bronze outside the Bassline in Newtown. She had the voice of a fallen angel. She was stellar, royalty, irrepressible, and like so many of the great stars, troubled and haunted by demons of her own. This is a great statue. It captures her essence. She is sitting on a bar-stool, hand on knee, waiting to perform. There is supposed to be a microphone in front of her, but someone has stolen it. That’s Joburg for you, but Ma Brrr would probably have thrown back her head and laughed. Since when did she need a microphone to sing?
