I popped into MuseuMAfricA (yes, that’s the correct spelling) in Newtown for the first time in ages today. What a beautiful space. It’s vast and cavernous and high-ceilinged and used to be the fruit and vegetable market of Joburg. Today it houses several different museums, showcasing photography, geology, musical instruments and much, much more. But it’s just a great building to get lost in, and then to find surprising and enlightening things in. The current main exhibition is “The Rise and Fall of Apartheid”, a powerful and superbly curated collection of masses of photographs of everyday life and resistance during the Apartheid years. It’s on until the end of April. Do pop in. This place is a treasurehouse, and it deserves more visitors. Entry is free, and it’s open every day except Monday.
