Sam Nzima’s iconic photograph of the young Hector Pieterson, cradled in the arms of Mbuyisa Makhubo on June 16, 1976 in Soweto, still has the power to chill the blood. It made Nzima’s name as a photographer, but it destroyed his career too – he was hounded by the police, and he fought for many years to earn the rights to the image. The photograph on the right, taken moments later and very rarely published, shows Hector Pieterson about to be placed in the back of Nzima’s Press car. MuseuMAfricaA, Newtown.
