But then it’s not really “bottomless”, is it? I think what may have happened is that someone ordered 10 coffees, and then started hallucinating and refused to pay the bill. So the lawyers made the restaurant – JB Rivers in Hyde Park – add the little disclaimer. I would complain to the ASASA, but personally, I could never have more than 2X bottomless coffees in a row. Caffeine, when first introduced to Europe, via Africa and the Middle East in the 17th Century, was regarded by the powers-that-be as a dangerous drug, the fuel of revolution and a formenter of toxic ideas. Charles II banned coffee-houses, and so did Frederick the Great, although his motive was to force the populace to stick to drinking beer. Fortunately, good sense and good coffee prevailed. Two cups maximum, please.
