Shawn Phillips takes a swig-break during his set at the acoustic RetroFest at Nirox Sculpture Park. “It’s water,” he said, in his Texan drawl, “not vodka.” He was one of the great singer-songwriters of the 70s, with a dreamy, elliptical style that make him stand out hair and shoulders from his contemporaries. Originally from Fort Worth, Texas, he now lives in Port Elizabeth, where he is also very active as a rescuer with the National Sea Rescue Institute. He continues to make music, and it sounds just as distinctive and seductive as ever.
